GROUND GLASS JOINT TOOLS

Ground glass joint holders, also known as GonG holders, are used to hold or form the ground glass joints.

The male holders hold the female glass joints, and the female holders hold the male glass joints.

All of our holders are made from high grade, fine grain moulding graphite, and machined on CNC machines for accuracy.

Ground glass joint formers can also be found here.

The handles are custom turned metal and covered by our patented heat, chemical and flame resistant covers.

  • GROUND GLASS JOINT GRINDER - 10mm MALE by FLUG

GROUND GLASS JOINT GRINDER - 10mm MALE by FLUG

This listing is for single or multiple grinding tools, for the best deal we recommend to purchase the entire set, which is found as a separate listing. These are made to the same 1:10 taper specifications as all glass on glass tapered joints.

Sizes available are the 10/19mm,14/23mm and 19(18.8)/26mm are the fittings these grinders were modeled after.

They have been designed with maximum tool life in mind and will fit larger than the fittings preventing premature tool expiration due to grinding. How long the grinder lasts depends on how much material you have to grind. If the joint is formed precisely, you may get up to 300 joints made. If you have to move a lot of material, they’ll wear out pretty quickly.

These tools are named by what they are intended to grind, not what shape they are. It can be confusing. For example; The 14mm M tool is a stainless steel female grinding tool, and the 14mm F tool is a male shaped grinding tool.  These tools are made from high quality 303 stainless steel and are designed to be used in a cordless drill (Carefully!)

It’s recommended that you use Silicone Carbide (220 grit) to construct the joints. This may be purchased separately. You may also want a finer grade of Silicone for the final grind (also available separately) but most find the 220 may be all they need.

  • GROUND GLASS JOINT HOLDER - 10mm MALE for LATHE WORK by TORCH HYPNOSIS

GROUND GLASS JOINT HOLDER - 10mm MALE for LATHE WORK by TORCH HYPNOSIS

Version 7,10 mm Male GonG holder for lathe work, but can be used offhand as well.
Machined on a lathe to .0001 runout and polished to a mirror finish.

    Please Note:
This holder will hold any 10mm Male joint.
If using a lathe, it is recommended to leave a distance of 12 - 13mm (1/2") between the jam nut on the tool and the lathe chuck.
It is also recommended that the graphite part of a cold tool be preheated in a reduced flame before placing in the kiln. A cold tool should never be placed in a hot kiln because of the differing coefficient of expansion between steel and graphite.

  • GROUND GLASS JOINT HOLDER - 14mm MALE for LATHE WORK by FLUG

GROUND GLASS JOINT HOLDER - 14mm MALE for LATHE WORK by FLUG

14 mm Male GonG holder for lathe work.
Graphite is fine grain which is sturdy and will stand up to lathe work.

True-Running portion of the shank is 5/8" x 3" 303. The tail is 3/8" x 2.5" heavy walled 304 tubing and probably won't run "super" nasa true. The shank is bored out of bar stock and turned and faced as it's extremely hard to find true running, actually turned, round steel tubing.

Shank is threaded 1/2"-20, graphite is threaded same and cemented to the shank with a sodium silicate+refractory cement. This will take a great deal of heat (~2200F) but, like anything in high heat, isn't totally invincible.

Graphite is turned on the shank so it runs true with the shank. If the graphite is removed and not indexed when it's replaced, it might not run true, so taking the head of is a NO-NO!

These have a thick lathe shank but they're not meant to be beaten on. Please use your knowledge of thermal expansion etc. to make sure your not clamping glass on/in the tapers.
